What did you think of Dan Jones’ presentation on style?
Nov 5th, 2005 | By Tom Johnson | Category: NewsWhat did you think of Dan Jones’ presentation on style? I was impressed by the breadth of his presentation, the many quotes and other sources he pulled together to give us a comprehensive treatment of style.
The two points that stuck out to me most were the navy officers preferring the affected style over the plain style, and the Joseph Williams quote on the need for a flash of elegance (”relentless simplicity can be dry, even arid. It has the spartan virtue of unsalted meat and potatoes, but such fare is rarely memorable”).
The question I walked away with was whether I am being too plain in my technical writing style. Perhaps I should indulge in some more style. On the other hand, indulgence in style may end up being out of place, silly, or inappropriate. Tom

I actully used th eteleconference from here in Sarasota and thoroughly engoyed it. Although, I think he could actually hear when my child cried or anything else that went on. I am primarily an editor so I thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing, even his rant on those who misuse words! Honestly it was very entertaining and I will be going out to find some of his books.
Thanks.
I think, Dan Jones is a very well like good man.
