New Site Design Makes It Easier to Find Information
Jul 1st, 2007 | By Tom Johnson | Category: NewsI’ve added a new design for the site to make it easier to find content. The previous site’s page menu was a little hidden; this time the shaded sidebar menu shows child pages relevant to the page you’re viewing. So if you click the Employment button, you see all child pages under Employment, etc. You don’t have to scroll down the page looking for a hierarchical list of pages.
Another feature is reduced categories. Now there are only 6 categories to choose from. Posts marked as Events automatically appear in the right sidebar in addition to the blog area.
I’ve tried to reduce the clutter of the site and make it more of a content management system. You’ll also notice I added a Wiki button. This takes you to our new wiki page (which is an installation of Mediawiki). There’s not any content on the wiki now, but I’m hoping we can use that to keep updated about the goals, initiatives, and progress of the various teams, most notably the FTCC.
Do you like the redesign? I brought back the bridge photo for the banner. This photo was taken by Tricia Sullivan — I crosshatched the clouds a bit, though, so the reader’s focus will meander more to the content rather than the header.
One little quandary I’m having is with notifying members of new information on the blog. Ideally, everyone should be signed up for e-mail notification of new posts. Despite my past urgings for members to sign up for this, we only have about 60 subscribers. In contrast, our listserv has 300 subscribers. I’m considering manually subscribing the remaining 240 listserv members to site updates, but that of course violates free will opt-in policies. If you have any thoughts, let me know.
We’ve posted meetings for the next few months, so be sure to check those out. Note that our July meeting will be held July 12 rather than July 5.
Do you like the new design of the site? Do you have any thoughts for improving it? Any points of confusion, resources we need to add? I’m open to suggestions. Use the comment form below or send me an e-mail.
